Adult Art Classes:

Oil Painting

Instructor: Daniel B. Dias

Closed

This class offers a look at a variety of oil painting methods and materials. Students will develop an appreciation for the physical qualities of paint and learn how to manipulate these qualities toward individual intentions. Demonstrations will be given by the instructor in order to familiarize students with techniques/approaches which we will be employing. That includes a “Blocking In” approach, Alla Prima and Glazing. We will be generally working from still-lives, but students are welcomed to bring in their own reference for subject matter.

Supplies

The following supplies are included in the class fee:

  • Mineral spirits

  • 3 16x20 stretched canvas

The following are supplies needed for the first day of class:

  • Palette (I recommend a glass or plexiglass palette. 18" x 24" with white paper and cardboard taped to the back)

  • 1 palette knife (bent shank)

  • 1 Container with tight-fitting lid, quart-size, similar to coffee can (this will be used for our mineral spirits)

  • Brushes in a variety of sizes

  • (I recommend stiff, natural bristle brushes: rounds - #4, #10 and flats - #2, #14, #24)

  • Oil Paint (moderate quality, student grade; I recommend "Winton" brand colors made by Windsor Newton). The following is the bare minimum of colors we will use:

  • Alizarin crimson

  • Cadmium red medium (hue)

  • Cadmium yellow light (pale)

  • Lemon yellow

  • Ultramarine blue (sometimes called French ultramarine)

  • Phthalo blue

  • Burnt sienna

  • Titanium white

We will also need the following as the course progresses, but no need to buy them yet:

  • 1 small tuna fish or cat food can (this will be used for our painting mediums)

  • 1 small bottle of Liquin or other alkyd-based painting medium
